JOHANNESBURG – Convicted murderer Oscar Pistorius says he doesn’t want to go back to jail and believes his victim, Reeva Steenkamp, would also not want him to waste his life behind bars.
The former athlete made the comments in an interview to British television channel ITV, which is scheduled to be broadcast in South Africa on M-Net tomorrow night.
Pistorius will be sentenced for murder next month after sentencing proceedings concluded last week.
The athlete told ITV that if given a chance to redeem himself, he would like to give back to the community.
“I don’t want to go back to jail, I don’t want to have to waste my life sitting there, I would like to help the less fortunate, like I did in my past. I would like to believe that if Reeva could look down upon me, she would want me to live that life.”
Pistorius has repeated his claim made during his testimony that after hearing a noise in the toilet cubicle, he fired the four shots before he knew it.
This suggests he has not accepted the court’s finding that he acted with intention, and is therefore guilty of murder.
